History
The Methodist Girls’ High School, one of the most esteemed academic institutions, situated opposite the wave –striking elegant coast of Point Pedro in the Jaffna peninsula the brain domain of Sri Lanka harmonizes well, with its motto “Onward Upward Towards The Light”. The school with its ever shining flame of educational brilliance and records holds a great history of 185long years full of marked events of fame. This school initially prospered under the patronage of foreign missionaries for 125 years and since 1950 it has been nurtured by the management of native principals into its present coveted status.
The Wesleyen Missionary that visited Sri Lanka proposed the establishment of this school and it was founded through the great initiative of Rev. Thomas Squancr in the year of 1823 AD. In the early stage, the school started as a primary school had only male children to receive education.
In 1875, owing to the massive efforts of the priest Rev. W.R.Vincent and his wife, it was upgraded as a school with boarding facilities for female students, with the addition of a new building block. This event was a turning point in female education. It’s notable that the school with one hall and three classrooms only in the beginning grew up gradually with classes from Grade 3 to Grade 8. The priests were the managers of this school then. English ladies, Miss Pestos, Miss Nistale, Miss Peterswals and Miss Rues Shamp served as the principals of the school until the 19th century.
Miss. Parks, who served as the principal from 1910 AD to 1915 AD was very efficient and many students had the opportunity to study in the school, irrespective of caste or religion during her tenure. When Miss. Fratfourt was the principal in 1921, the old girls of the school afforded to build a hall to the school. The construction of a science laboratory during the same period was a milestone in the school history. It is significant to note that the first Tamil female student who got through the Tamil Junior Certificate examination in 1924, was a student of this school.
During the service of Miss. Robinson in 1926, the school made progress not only in education but other disciplines also. Athletic and Scout performances at national level brought reputation to the school.
Madam Greenwood succeeded as the principal from 1927 to 1937. In 1938 two more classrooms and a home science practical room were built. The promotion of the school as a bilingual school in 1938 is a fact of pride.
When Miss. Everatte took over as the principal of this school, the Vembady bilingual school was closed and the students from that school were admitted to our school. During the office of Miss. Murgatroyd as the principal further the new classrooms were constructed to accommodate the rising students and the enlargement of the hall and the construction of a new hostel were also effected. Subsequent to the rapid development of the school in this period, our school status was raised as the English High School, in 1942.
From 1944 to 1947 was the period when Miss. Parker ran office as the principal. The students from our school were offered a fine opportunity to participate in an event held in the independence square in Colombo, in 1948. Miss Dore who served from 1949 to 1950 was the last English principal of the school. Miss R.N.Chinnaiya was appointed as the principal from 1950 to 1966. She must be proud of being the first National principal of this school. During her tenure as the principal, she further developed the school and many new building blocks were constructed. Her period witnessed then progress of science stream and co-curricular activities. The school was promoted as a Grade 1 school in the same period. The creation of the school motto and the school anthem was the outcome of the great labour and toil.
The increase in the number of university entrants from both the science and arts streams of this school during the period from 1966 to 1974 when Miss. Arumugam was the principal of the school was a fine index of the overall educational improvement. Scouting developed and a section of rangers was initiated. Disciplines of Fine Arts and a band group were formed. Saivistic culture in the school underwent a reformation in a mild but a steady nature, instilling a firm impression in the minds of the people of this region. The conduction of saivistic prayer and prayer hall still remain as symbols of her relentless service.
Miss. Mann became the principal of the school during the period from 1974 to 1983. Much progress in education and other fields could be observed in her time. She was succeeded by Mrs. T. Ariyaratnam who served at a time which suffered a lot of political upheaval.
Mrs. L. Santhirasekaram who took over from 1987 to 1993 took steps successfully to restore the affected buildings and to introduce new subjects such as stenography and typing.
During the time of Mrs. R. Nanthakumar as the principal from 1994 to 1995, the school had progress in numerous ways. When Mrs. M. G. Thavaratnam was appointed as the principal from 1996 to 1997 the school experienced remarkable developments in curricular and co-curricular activities.
Mrs. S.Suntharesan , the principal of the school at present who assumed duties as the principal in 1997 looks extremely diligent and zealous by nature. Her broader perspective and interest in the school have yielded substantial break through . Many new buildings have been constructed and new subject disciplines like computer course have been introduced. Students’ participation and attainments in English and sports competition sat District and National levels have been significant. This school has been incorporated in the list of schools coming within the purview of the Divisional School Development Scheme and development projects for the school have been launched since 1998. It’s worth mentioning that the professional exposure Mrs. Sunthareshan received by attending the Training Programme organized by the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) under the project of Modernization of Senior Secondary Schools, held in New Delhi, India from 10.09.2001 to 28.09.2001 has been very contributory to the school development.
In 2001, the School Development Society purchased the 8 acre land to the west and in front of the school for Rs.400,000/= from the fund donated by parents and Well-wishers and used it for extending the school hall.
Winning of the first place by the Netball Team(Under 17) of our school in the Provincial Level in 1997, 2002 and 2003 and the eligibility of the team to participate in the National Level are evident of the growth of Co curricular Activities of the school.
It’s greatly to the credit of Mrs.S.Sunthareshan that she keenly participated in the three week workshop for the School Principals and Educational Administrators, held in Ontario, Canada in 2003 and the fine experience she attained from such participation has led to superb achievements by the school.
On 26.12.2004 the school suffered damages by Tsunami. In the year 2004, foundation was laid for a new one storeyed building housing the Principal’s Office, a Library and Five Class room and this construction was completed in 2006.
The School Website was started on 29.07.2007. The G.C.E.(A/L) English Medium (Science & Maths Stream) was inaugurated by Our Zonal Director of Education on 04th May 2009.
